NFL Cornerback Tips: Buffalo Bills Cris Hill Cornerback Drills *the how and why*
Growing up I have always liked a teacher and coach to always be able to share the knowledge and information and tell me the how and why. When the teacher did this, it helped me believe in the philosophy and buy into the system. At the end of the day, the whole point of our coach/player relationship is for both of us to grow and learn and most importantly win.
In this video Virginia Tech Hokie/Buffalo Bills cornerback Cris Hill explains a basic and simple defensive back drill but this concept and skill is probably one of the most important skills to have. It involves back pedaling and breaking. Back pedaling is something that most defensive backs do. I would say not all, because when I played for the houston texans in 09′ and 10′ we did not back pedal. The technique that we used was a shuffle technique. Coach David Gibbs prefered shuffling because he believed it was better for cornerbacks to already have our hips open. Most coaches and teams back pedal though so if a player really wants to get to the next level, they must have a really smooth efficient back pedal. Next thing is breaking on a pass or really anything whether it is a running play could mean the difference of winning or loosing. Breaking on the ball with no wasted movements is the key to the success of most defensive backs.
This video Cris Hill explains a specific type of break called the T-step. I know that I used this break for the majority of college when I was with the Ohio University Bobcats until I got to the pros and learned a new break from Prime Time Deion Sanders, which he like to called the running man.
