Dreams of Going Pro: Don’t Give Up!
Most high school and college athletes dream of becoming a pro and signing a multi- million dollar contract. They dream their athletic talents and abilities will create success for them at the next level which will provide a better lifestyle for themselves and their family.
I remember back in 2009 working out with my best friend Mark Parson just a few days before the NFL draft. Mark had just finished up a great career as a cornerback at Ohio University where he made such great impact that he caught some early attention from NFL scouts. That day after our workout Mark was feeling a little discouraged because he wasn’t getting many calls from scouts or attracting as much attention from NFL teams as he would have liked. I know Mark had what it took to have success at the next level because I had the opportunity to win with him in high school and train alongside him.
I encouraged him with some words and an inspirational thought that sticks with both of us today. Just beyond the track where we were training was a large hill. I told Mark to look at the hill. Then I asked him what was on the other said? He said, “I don’t know.” I said, “I know you don’t, but the only way to find out is to start walking up the hill, face the adversity, face the challenge and use your faith to confidently discover the unknown!” It was a radical thought but that day it inspired both of us to continue to fight for our dreams despite all contradictory evidence. The next day Mark got a call from the Detroit Lions and a invite to come to a private workout. That opportunity led to a 3 year NFL career living out his dream playing with the Houston Texans for one year and the New Orleans Saints for two years where he finished his pro career.
Did you know that less than 1% of athletes make it to the pros? There are over 400,000 athletes in the NCAA all competing to be the best! What can you do to set yourself apart? To gain an advantage? To get the “Slight Edge?”
Here are 3 Factors that determine your success at the next level and ability to get paid the big bucks. As an athlete or in any profession you will always be paid in direct proportion to…
1. Demand– The Demand for what you do. Whatever position you play or whatever your skills you must be elite and the team who pays you will do so because they value your skills and have a demand for what you do.
2. Skill– Your ability to do it! Whether your position is offense or defense or whether you are a rookie or a veteran, you will be valued and paid for your ability to continue to give a quality performance in your skill position or role on the team.
3 Supply– The Difficulty if replacing you. You must be the athlete who can’t be replaced! Think of any great athlete you know like Kobe Bryant, Michael Jordan, Darrell Revis, Wayne Gretzky, etc. These athletes all had one thing in common, they all worked hard to become the best at what they did and they made it
very difficult to replace them. Therefore keeping their jobs and earning more money.
So all you athletes who dream of making it big…DO IT! Set your goal, make your plan and take action! Your future is yours!
